Are those harpies not satisfied that they already have Willie Randolph’s blood on their hands? Are they not shamed that the Yankees completely ignored them and moved Joba Chamberlain to the rotation? They are utterly shameless about the fact that they create controversy and conflict solely to sell newspapers. That’s what sells.

A quick overview:

John Harper (NYDN):

Still, let’s be honest, this question of choosing has as much to do with Santana as Pettitte at the moment. Like a lot of people, I thought Santana would dominate the less imposing lineups in the National League, and be practically a lock to win 20 games this season.

Instead he has been good but far from great. Santana is 7-7 with a 3.01 ERA after taking a tough loss Saturday, and he has had his share of those. But he just hasn’t pitched like one of the best pitchers in baseball.

Yes, Andy Pettitte and his 3.98 ERA have been so much better. I am as big an Andy fan as anyone, but get real you moron. Church is injured for the Mets, and they don’t have a quality left fielder. Run scoring is just as much a part of winning as run prevention is. Pettitte was EXTREMELY shaky yesterday, but was able to get out of it by pitching around good hitters to go after Phillips and Tatis. The Yankee lineup drilled Pedro two days ago, and they’ve been hitting well lately. To hold them to even 3 runs is extremely impressive.

They should probably sign Barry Bonds, not just because he could still put up MVP numbers and significantly help their team, but he would make these same writers shut up about Santana at least.

Joel Sherman (NYP):

THE Yankees’ most critical offseason decision played out on the Shea Stadium mound yesterday: Andy PettitteAndy Pettitte vs. Johan Santana.

Every time Pettitte approximates Santana - or in the case of yesterday, is his equal or better - it is a huge triumph for the Yankees’ decision-making process. Because if Pettitte vs. Santana is a virtual draw, then the Yanks break the tie in their favor by moving forward with Phil Hughes, Melky Cabrera, Jeff Marquez, a lot more disposable income and not having to worry if Santana’s era of dominance is slowly eroding.

Midway through this season, it is not necessarily disadvantage Mets, since they needed to make their Santana trade. But it sure is playing out as advantage Yankees, as Pettitte authored his fourth straight strong start and win, pitching the Yankees to a 3-2 Subway Series triumph.

The Mets have lost in Santana’s past five starts, and he is 0-4 in that period. Like in most of those outings, Santana was very good, but not the great pitcher the Mets assumed they were obtaining. He is now .500 (7-7) despite a 3.01 ERA, in part because the Mets don’t hit very much for him.

He remains an ace, but not the ace of all major league aces as he had been for Minnesota. His fastball had good life in the 90-93 mph range against the Yanks, but that remains down a few mphs from his Twin peak. His changeup remains strong enough that no one should be surprised by a powerful second half that spurs a playoff drive.

But no one can be surprised any longer if that September swoon last year was not just a blip, but a harbinger of Santana’s stuff diminishing a tick. That becomes a greater problem for the Mets because they not only obtained Santana for four prospects, but signed him for six years. Maybe Santana’s Met career will resemble Pedro Martinez’s: never as good over time as at the outset; never as good because age and heavy use had robbed just enough stuff to move Santana from historic highs to something less and less with each passing year.

Sherman acknowledges the run support problem, but is still ridiculous. 3.01 ERA. Look at that number again. 3.01 ERA. You expected his numbers to improve in the NL, but he usually doesn’t really get it going until the 2nd half.

BTW, Andy was NOT better yesterday. He was very, very lucky that those HRs did not drive in any baserunners. Let’s dispel that convenient fiction right now. Andy was pitching to half of a lineup.

Ken Davidoff (Newsday):

We know the Mets’ offense largely stinks. But couldn’t Santana just once get a 1-0 lead, as he did yesterday, and carry the baton to victory? Of this five-game stretch, the only one for which he couldn’t have done any more was the June 12 start here against Arizona, when the bullpen gave up his 4-0 advantage. Otherwise, he’s getting outperformed in low-scoring games.

If Davidoff knew jack shit about baseball, he’d know that Santana actually was screwed out of the 2005 Cy Young by run support. Despite dominant, sub-3 ERA performances with the Twins, he’s alternated 20/19 win seasons with ones with ones where they couldn’t score to save their lives. Is Johan responsible for the offense? Maybe on the Twins where he eats a quarter of the payroll, but the Mets have no excuse.

It’s not quite FireJoeMorgan, but my jaw figuratively hit the floor when I read the sports editorials in the morning papers today. I’m a Yankee fan, and I don’t really care too much when they say similar things about their team because I know Cashman is a bedrock of consistency and doesn’t listen to them at all. I really do fear that Santana is going to have something like a 15-15, 2.85 ERA season, yet is going to be portrayed as somehow being a bust. Even worse, they may try to force him out of town so they can acquire a pitcher who wins “big games”. And given the state of the Mets’ front office, they might actually listen.

And the hypocrisy, jesus christ. A month ago they wanted to put Pettitte out to pasture. In the offseason, he was a HGH using bum. Now he “just knows how to win games” because they’ve decided to make an example out of Santana and turn their pitchforks at him. Unbelievable.

First, the roster for this fall:

LB - 9 (counting Laryea, not counting Dumont)
DB - 10 (not counting Anderson, counting Bing)
K/P - 2

= 67 + 17 = 84. Studivant leaving opened up a ship. While I don’t expect Francis to be back, one spare ship means that ship hasn’t entirely sailed.

Scholarship seniors leaving:

1. Brock (assumed on ship)
2. Gilmartin
3. Greene
4. Lee
5. Malast
6. McCourty
7. McGovern (might be able to apply for a sixth year, unknown if staff would let him)
8. Quaye
9. Teel
10. Tverdov
11. Underwood
12. Watts
13. Westerman

That leaves 14 ships. If Kenny Britt is as good as we think he is, that’s 15. Add in a couple more due to normal attrition (injuries, transfers, fifth-year seniors not being invited back, being too conservative with players like Laryea, and recruits possibly not qualifying.)

Intuitively, I’d say expect 18 recruits next year. I was somewhat upset that we brought in so many players late in last year’s class. However, it may prove to have been necessary. We won’t know until August. Next: an early class projection.

Now we actually know how to get Chris Russo and the New York Times behind Rutgers. However:

1. Now I can’t visit any RU-related site that’s not being inundated with trolls.

2. Hardcore fans already knew the ND deal has been dead for quite some time.

3. Misrepresentation of what actually happened. ND didn’t make any unrealistic demands. Bob Mulcahy and Kevin White just could not come to an agreement. The deal was never formalized. It was an amicable parting, and unlike some teams (*cough*, BOSTON COLLEGE), Notre Dame very much remains a scheduling option in the future. I hate ND as much as anyone, but let’s at least tell the truth people.

4. It’s not like ND is the only school that’s tried to pull this. Straight from the AD’s mouth, practically every traditional power has refused to play one and ones with Rutgers. Penn State, Florida, Georgia, Texas, Michigan, USC, you name it. All of them want one-offs at their place, or 4 for 2s and similar bullshit. The ironic thing is to watch Penn State fans bash Notre Dame over this issue, when they’re guilty of far, far worse.

Ok, it’s fun to let off a little steam and bash Notre Dame every once in a while. After all, they do deserve it. Now it’s just getting annoying.

I am no fan of Pro Football Talk. But this entry really takes the cake. At least give credit where it’s due.

I did not personally work sources to get this information. That is freely acknowledged. However, this information has always been out there. All it required was for someone to do some grunt work. In compiling all of the 2007 and 2008 Wonderlic information on this blog, I have in grand total spent a couple of hours of my time.

And for those wondering about Manningham, there are a couple of other players in that class, as I noted below. RBs aren’t the sharpest knife in the drawer, but Chris Johnson scored a 10. Andre “Bubba” Caldwell scored an 8. Unfortunately for East Carolina, the worst known offender was Travis Williams, scoring only a 4.

Football Outsiders is another site that’s tried to objectively analyze Combine data. Does Jerry Reese know something we don’t? Let’s take a look at a few of the top ‘08 performers.

The success of Ahmad Bradshaw this year was somewhat bittersweet. Ever since I read the first practice reports from Vacchiano and Garafalo about him (and Steve Smith), I’ll admit it: I was completely, utterly enamored. When Coughlin finally freed him from fumble-induced limbo, I was ecstatic.

Yet, this upcoming draft is strangely devoid of joy for the exact same reason. I am a recent Rutgers graduate, and they have become my second football love after the Giants. Ray Rice, there can be no end on the superlatives that this remarkable young man deserves. Growing up in New Rochelle, Rice has been able to shake off and overcome a remarkable run of family tragedies. He is not only a tremendous football player, but fully embodies Coach Schiano’s commitment to running an outstanding program both on and off the field. And most remarkably, on the field, he’s practically the reincarnation of Joe Morris. He’s the anti-Ron Dayne, running as hard as Morris or even Brandon Jacobs despite his diminutive frame.

Even if you don’t care for Rice, this is widely acknowledged as an excellent draft for RB depth, and it’s somewhat unfortunate that we can’t swing a deal to open up a roster spot this season.

I’ve seen quite a bit of Douglas. He’s the polar opposite of his Louisville teammate, Mario Urrutia. Urrutia has all of the natural physical gifts, yet he acts like the world should be handed to him on a silver platter. Douglas on the other hand, is the epitome of class. Described a a poor man’s Marvin Harrison, you will not find a harder worker out there. No one will work harder on routes, put in as much time in the film room, or catch as many footballs after practice.

Keglar, Kehl, and Guyton were Combine revelations. There are a lot of decent day 1 options for the Giants at LB, but I’d love to look at both if we somehow have to wait until day 2.

I’m not as big on Talib as most, and DRC surely will not be available. Wheatley, Scandrick, and Molden are all definitely worth watching however. None of them received much press, but all have dazzled in workouts. Intuitively, I think Jerry Reese is a scout’s scout. He loves untapped athleticism, and crawling the small schools for talent. Accorsi loved the midwestern brand names - Penn State, Michigan, Notre Dame, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Ohio State - with a Miami here and there to spice things up. This is one major reason why I don’t expect Dan Connor to be a Giant on Saturday. I’d bet on one of these three corners being Giants on Sunday. Mike Garafalo reports that they have brought in Molden, and a very similar player in Tyrell Johnson.

It’ll be interesting to see whether the reports of interest in Kenny Phillips pan out, or whether Reese bets on Molden. Last year, Ralph Vacchiano scored a direct hit on Aaron Ross, and has a fairly good track record on these matters; now he’s saying that Phillips will be the pick. Ideally, I’d like to go all defense on the first day with a safety, linebacker, and corner. The supposed interest in a DT is a little strange given that Alford was coming on later in the year. On day 2, I’d like to grab a big WR (Monk?) to replace Anthony Mix. Of course, this all goes out the window if the FO is more worried about OT or WR than we expect.

edit: A helpful poster on BBI pointed out that Donnie Avery ran a 6.30 at his Pro Day. Remember that name.
