2008 Undrafted Free Agents Tracker

Some people have been wondering about Adarius Bowman. This list was initially compiled with the intention of publicizing information as quickly as possible. I did not bite on a supposed Brady Leaf rumor, but otherwise decided to publish anything that did not directly contradict other information. That process ended up working reasonably well. The Bowman tip has not been remotely confirmed, and I currently have no idea as to his actual status.

The Three-Cone Theory
April 24, 2008
Note: I had absolutely nothing to do with discovering this. It’s just a useful observation that’s worth noting.
A while back, a few posters on BBI noticed an interesting trend. Quoting directly:
Aaron Ross (6.72) 3rd among all CBs
Steve Smith (6.68 ) 4th among all WR
Zak Deossie (6.96) 4th among all LB
Kevin Boss (6.96) 1st among ALL TE
Adam Koets (7.44) 1st among all OT
Ahmad Bradshaw (6.70) 2nd among all RB Read the rest of this entry »

Some scary quotes in the Star Ledger this morning:
Shockey, 27, who suffered a broken fibula in a Dec. 16 loss to the Redskins, feels his career is being cut short by all the blocking he has been asked to do since Tom Coughlin became coach of the Giants in 2004. While blocking is an integral part of a tight end’s job description, Shockey believes he was more effective as a receiver under former coach Jim Fassel and offensive coordinator Sean Payton, now the coach of the New Orleans Saints, who are interested in trading for Shockey.
Shockey has complained about his role several times since Coughlin arrived. Late in the 2004 season he griped about being turned into “an average player” by the new coach’s offense. This came three months after he complained about pre-snap motion, which made him “tired before I get to my final spot.”
In addition to neutralizing his receiving ability, Shockey believes the number of injuries he has suffered over the past few years can be attributed to all the blocking he has done. He has battled several ankle sprains, including one that nearly sidelined him for the game against the Redskins in which he broke his leg. Read the rest of this entry »

Peter King, irresponsible journalist
March 24, 2008
In his latest MMQB column, Peter King stirs up the hornet’s nest again.
“9. I think, Giant beat writers, you might sniff around this one: New Orleans is not through trying to acquire Jeremy Shockey.”
Ugh. Weeks after Jerry Reese definitively put this to rest.
Mike Garafalo did some digging and found out what the Saints offered in January:
“All I know is what I heard recently - that the Saints’ original offer was a second-round pick (No. 40 overall, if it was this year’s pick they offered) and S Roman Harper, their second round pick in ‘06.”
The Giants instantly hung up after getting that offer. He’s not on the market, and it’s frankly irresponsible for Peter King to try to fill space in his column by starting this garbage up again. NO can call all they want, absolutely nothing is going to happen. I’m frankly sick to death of this topic. I don’t want to hear another round of the New York media being idiotic. Give it a rest. Go bark up some other tree.
Draft local visit exemption
March 13, 2008
Here’s an interesting post I read from the DMN Cowboy blog
| Quote: |
| Kansas CB Aqib Talib, a Richardson Berkner product, will visit the Cowboys facility in mid-April, joining UNLV LB Beau Bell and Arizona CB Antoine Cason as those set to come to Valley Ranch.Talib’s case is a little different than those of the other two. Because he’s a local product, the team is allowed to conduct a workout with him at Valley Ranch, something the Cowboys can’t do with out-of-area prospects. And his presence will not count against the team’s quota of 30 in-house visits with draft-eligible players. Here’s a list of some other kids who would be eligible under said exemption …Houston RB Anthony Alridge (Denton) Oklahoma TE Joe Jon Finley (Arlington) Cal RB Justin Forsett (Arlington Grace Prep) Kansas DT James McClinton (Garland Lakeview) Texas DT Frank Okam (Lake Highlands) Colorado CB Terrence Wheatley (Plano East) |
From a NYT article last year
The visits are arranged and paid for by the teams, which are allowed to meet with a player only once and for no longer than a day, the league spokesman Greg Aiello said. Visits may not include any physical activity, he said, and teams can meet with as many as 30 draft-eligible players. That limit, however, does not apply to players who attended college or high school in the same metropolitan area, or players whose parents reside nearby. Read the rest of this entry »
London Calling
October 22, 2007
It’ll be interesting to see if Ronnie Brown is hurt.
The Dolphins aren’t nearly as bad as their record. The only thing they really do poorly is stop the run. They’re 29th in the NFL in turnovers, and 29th in penalties. Those three stats are coaching-related, understandable given Cameron’s inexperience. They’re also tied for 24th in sacks with a lot of teams. Houck has that OL playing really well, and Red Hadnot might be getting Pro Bowl consideration if he was on a better team.

Giant Thoughts
September 24, 2007
Manning was a mixed bag. The drops were infuriating, but both INTs looked very bad. The 2nd one was clearly out of frustration, as there had been a crucial drop on the play before. He should have had another INT, but Plaxico made a ridiculous circus catch to slightly counterbalance the earlier drops my him and Shockey.
Ward is looking decent at RB. He can move the chains. But during our last drive, it was evident that we needed Jacobs. This game would have been much better if both backs could have been alternated and we tried pounding Jacobs a little. Hope he comes back soon. They probably should have used Droughns a little to bring some more power. Read the rest of this entry »
Giants positional breakdown
August 9, 2007
Some thoughts based on the news out of camp:
QB: Manning will improve somewhat-to-decently over last years numbers. Will up completion percentage and lower INTs. Lorenzen looks much better this year.
RB: Should be ok, even though not at Barber’s level. Jacobs looks very good. Droughns is just a backup. Bradshaw is the sleeper and will be the next Dave Meggett in a few years. Read the rest of this entry »
What If? Sports Counterfactuals (Jul 12-ongoing)
August 5, 2007
What if Juan Gonzalez doesn’t turn down an 8-year, $140 million contract from the Tigers in 2000?
Believe it or not, he actually thought he could get more given the era. Instead, he struggled with injuries for one year and then signed a 1-year deal with the Indians, before flirting with the Mets and stealing more money from the Rangers. Read the rest of this entry »
